As the Hobbits journey out of the Shire and finally arrive in the Village of Bree, it is here that we first meet Aragorn at the Inn of the Prancing Pony. Known only as Strider early in the movie trilogy, it is not until the Council of Elrond in Rivendell that his true lineage is revealed. Later, in the extended version of The Two Towers movie, we learn that he is a Dunedain Ranger and is a direct descendant of the people of Numenor.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the freindship between Gimli of Erebor and Legolas of Mirkwood is the long standing distrust of each others peoples each have. The close proximity of the Lonely Mountain and the home of the wood-elves in Mirkwood meant there was often commerce between the two peoples. The men of Lake-town often served as a go-between for the two fueding populations. Middle-Earth is better off for the friendship developed between this dwarf / elf pair.

Residing in Isengard, in the Tower of Orthanc, built by the people of Numenor in the Second Age. Having once been the head of the Istari, Saruman (Christopher Lee), aided by his servant Wormtongue, creates an army of Uruk-Hai to destroy the world of Men and has completely succumbed to the lure of power and evil. The presence of the Palantir in Orthanc warped his perceptions of events in Middle-Earth, as Sauron, who truly controlled what Saruman saw in it, eventually turned Saruman into a traitor.
