Bilbo Baggins is a happy Hobbit. He lives contently in One Bagshot Row, Hobbiton, The Shire. Today was his Eleventy-first Birthday and the festivities beneath the Party Tree were a great success...until Bilbo pulled off one of his disappearing tricks. The poor Shire-folk didn't know what hit them. This photograph shows Bilbo Baggins feeling quite pleased with himself over his prank. Indeed, he is snickering in an almost Gollum-like fashion....hmmm.

Holding the designation of Saruman the White, in the years prior to The War of the Ring, Saruman is the head of his order of wizards. Known as the Istari, they are Valar emissaries sent to Middle-Earth early in the Second Age, ultimately by Iluvator, to match the machinations of Sauron. Having taken the ancient Numenorean stronghold of Orthanc for himself, and in possession of a Palantir, Saruman is eventually corrupted by Sauron. It is the wiser Gandalf that will eventually replace Saruman as head of his order. This photographs shows Saruman in the Tower of Orthanc in Isengard.

Elrond of Rivendell hosts one of the few remaining bastions of High Elves in Middle-Earth. These photographs shows the wise Elf deep in contemplation of the events of the Third Age, and in battle on the Dagorlad Plain at the end of the Second Age, as depicted in the prologue scenes. Having been present as Herald of Gil-Galad, Elrond is not unfamiliar with the evil of Sauron. Now head of the Last Homely House in the West, it is in Rivendell (Imladris) that Elrond calls together a Council that will form The Fellowship of the Ring.

Queen of Lothlorien, and mightiest of the Eldar still left in Middle-Earth, Galadriel ironically kept the Golden Wood hidden from the Eye of Sauron by the power of Nenya. Sister to Finrod, Galadriel and the members of her House of Noldor (High Elves) will ignore the orders of the Valar and make the passage to Middle-Earth in order to make war on Morgoth in the First Age. Morgoth had stolen the light of the Two Trees, before poisoning them, and encapsulated the light into three jewels...the Silmarils. With their trees dead, the High-Elves of the House of Noldor sought the jewels in their stead. Forbidden by the Valar to cross over the seas to contest Morgoth, Galadriel and the other members of her line were forbidden return to the Undying West. It was not until the end of the Third Age and the destruction of Sauron that Galadriel will eventually be allowed to return. She sailed from the Grey Havens with Cirdan the Shipwright, Elrond, and others. All of the available photographs of Galadriel depict her in Lothlorien. Many of the photographs center around the themes of her Swan Boat, and the kiss given to Frodo Baggins on the companies departure from Lothlorien.

A stunning juxtaposition of Middle-earth and twenty-first century filmmaking, it shows Gandalf, Saruman, and Peter Jackson during production of The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. Still photographer Pierre Vinet captured this defining moment on location in New Zealand as Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Christopher Lee (Saruman) and writer / director Peter Jackson prepared to shoot another scene. Each wizard is dressed in his powerful garb -- Gandalf and Saruman wear their flowing robes, while Jackson strolls beside them in his trademark shorts -- and each holds his magic-making device -- Gandalf and Saruman carry their staffs, while Jackson holds his notes for the day's shooting. A holographic New Line Cinema sticker is affixed to the rear.
