Wargs were common throughout Rhovanion and, as the power of Sauron grew, also in Eriabor. The Wargs were large evil wolves of some intelligence who allied themselves to Sauron and to the Orcs. They provided swift-footed mounts for the smaller Orcs but like their riders had an innate fear of sunlight and operated best at night. They were used mainly by the Hithaeglir Orcs but also saw service in the armies of Saruman. They also roamed the lands freely in packs as Bilbo Baggins would discover while observing them from a tree.

Laketown was a wealthy trading town located on Long Lake, between Dorwinion and Dale. It had no kings, only mayors, but some of its great trading families possessed much wealth. This figure represents a Laketown woman of this trading class. Her dress is typical of the Northern folk of this period. Unlike the military costumes of Laketown her attire shows little or no Easterling influence.

The pieces are purchased as unpainted, partially unassembled (some) lead figurines. The detailed work is exceptional and the paints are sold separately. Painting guidance is available on the Mithril website.

The Balrogs, or fire demons, were the mightiest of the servants of Morgoth. They were his strongest forces in his battle against the Valar in the First-age of Middle-earth, and possessed not only great strength, but intelligence and sorcery also. They were finally destroyed in the great war between the Valar and Morgoth but at least one survived the breaking of Thangorodrim, fleeing to the east and hiding itself in the very roots of the Misty Mountains. Here the Balrog lay undisturbed and entombed for countless centuries until during the Third-age of Middle-earth the Dwarven miners of Moria sunk deep shafts into the mountain roots in their quest for Mithril. Here they unwittingly disturbed the crouching form of the Balrog.

The War of the Ring began during the reign of Dain, who was slain by invading Easterlings during the battle of Dale. Thorin succeeded him in these inauspicious circumstances while the Easterling hordes were besieging the Dwarves and the refugees from Dale in their mountain fortress. When news reached Erebor of the passing of the Dark Lord, Thorin and his army together with their allies from Dale, broke out of their mountain stronghold, lifted the siege and routed the Easterlings.

The great horn of Helm was housed in one of the towers comprising the great defensive complex of Helm’s Deep. Named in honour of the great Helm Hammerhand, the horn itself was strategically placed so as to echo through the Glittering Caves of Aglarond, so as to hugely amplify its sound. It was used both as a warning signal and as a rallying cry, notably during the Battle of Helm’s Deep to signal Theoden’s mounted attack on the Uruk-Hai forces of Saruman.

Mithril MS568 Sauron Sammath Naur MS568 - Sauron at the Sammath Naur

(From the Mithril Website): This is a direct statement by our sculptor; "As you will probably have noticed, there has been a notable absentee in the recent Ms releases – namely Sauron at the Sammath Naur. This has been yet another instance of my perennial nervousness about making any representation of this character. For a long time I resisted any request to make the Dark-lord as I felt – and indeed still feel - that any depiction must fall short of anything that might do justice to this awful presence. The horror of Sauron is described with such masterly language by Tolkien that any depiction must inevitably detract from the image that is built up in one’s mind. However having said that, I did of course make Sauron at Gorgoroth and Annatar, the latter of which I was reasonably pleased with. Sauron in Orodruin at the Sammath-Naur is the most difficult of all. He is no longer a malign spirit encased in black armour. I have made three versions by now, the first in a kind of mask (which made him look a bit like a Cylon or Dumas’ man in the iron-mask!) and the second with more elaborate headgear. which I rejected. The third version (which itself has been revised a couple of times) is a lot simpler but hopefully more effective for all that. It should be ready to ship to the factory within a couple of weeks and is almost complete. I think that this will be my last tussle with the Dark-lord, but then again, I have said that every time!" - Chris Tubb (Sculptor).

Mithril MS569 Hirgon MS569 - Hirgon, Bearer of the Red Arrow
Part of the 32mm Fellowship Series

Hirgon is an emissary of Gondor, who brought the Red Arrow to Théoden at Harrowdale, in token of Gondor's desperate need for help from its Rohirrim allies. Its fletchings were black and its barbs were made of steel, and it took its name from a mark of red painted on the arrow's tip. Riding back eastward to his Lord, Denethor, Hirgon and his companions encountered Sauron's forces on the Rammas Echor, and were cut down as they tried to escape.

Sam sends Gollum to catch some food and Sam watches over Frodo as he sleeps. Gollum returns with a brace of coneys (rabbits). Sam proceeds to make a dinner for himself and Frodo, calling upon Gollum again to gather wild herbs for his rabbit stew. Frodo awakens and sees the cooking fire burning. During ‘The War of the Ring’ Saruman’s Orcs began to destroy the forest around Isengard. This destruction of trees caused great anger in the Ents as they were the care-takers of Fangorn Forest. Merry Brandybuck and Pippin Topok pleaded for action during the Entmoot. This resulted in a massive assault on Isengard by the Ents and they destroyed any half-Orcs they could find. Eventually they took control of Isengard and held Saruman hostage in Orthanc.

The pieces are purchased as unpainted, partially unassembled (some) lead figurines. The detailed work is exceptional and the paints are sold separately. Painting guidance is available on their Mithril website.

Lying on the north-western shores of the sea of Rhun, the land of Dorwinion forms the eastern marches of the great plain of Rhovanion. It is a country famous for its wines, which are traded far and wide across the region. Much of its produce is shipped to Esgaroth and is also highly prized by Thranduil and the Elves of Mirkwood. This figure represents one of those Dorwinrim merchants who ply their wares across Rhun and Rhovanion. This woman has a small pony which is laden with wine jars which contain samples of varieties. She is dressed in a style which is an amalgam of the Northmen costume style of Esgaroth, and that of the Easterling peoples of the Rhun area.

During the War of the Ring, a flock of crebain searched for the Ring-bearer as the company passed through Hollin and other areas. Saruman was a powerful wizard that became corrupted and allied himself with Sauron. He was killed in the Shire by Grima Wormtongue and was destroyed utterly as he had betrayed his wizardly order, the Istari.

This vignette depicts the opening scene of the battle before the Black Gate of Mordor. The black Trolls of Mordor are unleashed upon the remaining armies of Gondor, cutting swathes through the Gondorian ranks. Armed with war-hammers they strike down all before them. Lying dead on the ground are two Gondorian city spearmen, the Troll’s first victims. A Dol Amroth infantryman, whose own unit stands with Beregond and his men at this part of the battle front, is kneeling, also wounded by the great Troll. The awful creature itself has just struck at Beregond, shattering his shield. Beregond, attired in the splendid garb of the Minas Tirith guards staggers back under the impact while a fearful yet determined Pippin Took, also attired as a Minas Tirith guard, attempts to stand his ground.

Huorns are some of the oldest creatures on Middle-earth. According to Treebeard, they are wild and dangerous, but the Ents take care of them. They may have been Ents that became tree-ish or Trees that became Ent-ish. Or both. They can only communicate with Ents, not other creatures. They have the ability to create darkness to cover their movements, which can be quick and quite, despite their size and shape. Here you see a Huorn dismember an Isengard Orc that was fleeing from the broken siege of Helm’s Deep.

Part of the 32mm Fellowship Series
Actual Size: 40mm

King Elessar was crowned in the momentous year 3019 Third Age and ruled Gondor and Arnor until year 120 in the Fourth Age. His queen, Arwen, although of Elven blood, had chosen the fate of men rather than of Elves and remained in Middle-earth, never seeking passage to the West. In this vignette both Arwen and her son Eldarion, stand before the tomb of Elessar, which is flanked by Minas Tirith guardsmen. At the foot of the tomb rests the winged crown of Gondor, which Eldarion will inherit. After this Arwen also bade farewell to her son and departed the city forever and passed out of all knowledge into the fading land of Lorien.

Halbarad brought Aragorn a message from Arwen as well as a standard made by her, which Aragorn asked Halbarad to keep for him for a while. Halbarad accompanied Aragorn to a chamber high in the Hornburg where Aragorn looked into the palantir and revealed himself to Sauron. That morning Aragorn decided to take the Paths of the Dead under the White Mountains and Halbarad and Grey Company went with him along with Legolas and Gimli. When they reached the entrance, Halbarad said, "This is an evil door, and my death lies beyond it. I will dare to pass it nonetheless...". At midnight at the Stone of Erech, Aragorn summoned the Dead to fulfill their oaths and Halbarad unfurled Aragorn's standard, which appeared black with no device in the darkness. The Grey Company and the Army of the Dead passed through the lands of the South to Pelargir, where they captured the fleet of the Corsairs. Aragorn dismissed the Dead, and the Grey Company sailed up the Anduin. When they arrived at the Pelennor Fields in the midst of the battle, Aragorn's standard was once again unfurled but now it was seen to bear the emblem of the White Tree of Gondor and the Seven Stars and Crown of Elendil. Halbarad carried the standard onto the battlefield, where he was killed.

“Easterling” was a general name given by the settled peoples of Gondor and Rohan to those nomadic tribes who inhabited the lands of eastern Rhovanion and those vast steppes beyond the sea of Rhun. Divided into many clans and tribes the Easterling peoples were pastoralists who lived in temporary tented encampments and who moved according to the pasturage available to their great herds of horses. Famed for their skill as horsemen and for their dexterity with the composite bow, the Easterlings were fearsome warriors, and on many occasions have raided and invaded the western lands. Denethor II was the first son and third child of Ecthelion II. He was widely considered a man of great will, foresight, and strength. He began secretly using a palantír to probe Sauron's strength, though he incorrectly insisted he was able to control it. The effort aged him quickly, and the knowledge of Sauron's overwhelming force depressed him greatly, mostly due to deliberately biased visions from the palantír on the part of Sauron. Boromir's death depressed Denethor further, and he became ever more grim. Nonetheless he continued to fight Sauron with every resource at his disposal until the forces of Mordor arrived at the gates of the White City, at which point he lost all hope. Before the final Battle for Minas Tirith, Denethor ordered the warning beacons of Gondor to be lit, and forces were called in from all of Gondor's provinces. The civilian population of Minas Tirith was sent away to safety. As invasion seemed imminent, Denethor sent the Red Arrow to the Rohirrim. The Council decided that Gondor could make no stroke of its own but Denethor ordered Gondor's forces to the outer defences of Osgiliath and the great wall of the Rammas Echor. He wanted to make a stand, since the defences had been built at great expense and not yet been overrun. His son Faramir and the other commanders objected due to the Enemy's overwhelming numbers and preferred instead to defend the city itself, but Faramir nonetheless obeyed out of respect for his father and late brother. Faramir's body, apparently mortally wounded, was returned during the retreat, as the capital city was under siege by vastly superior forces. This last loss finally broke Denethor's spirit. Denethor committed suicide, having ordered his men to burn him alive on a pyre prepared for himself and Faramir. He took the white rod of his office and broke it over his knee, casting the pieces into the flames. He laid himself down on the pyre and so died, clasping the palantír in his hands. He also attempted to take the grievously injured and apparently dying Faramir with him, but was thwarted in this by the timely intervention of Peregrin Took, with help from Gandalf and the guard Beregond.

As Boromir lay dying, he remorsefully confessed to attempting to take the Ring from Frodo, and that his impending death was his penance. He urged Aragorn to save Minas Tirith, as he himself had failed. Aragorn reassured him that he had not failed, that "few have gained such a victory". Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas placed Boromir's body in one of their Elven boats, with his sword, belt, cloak, broken horn, and the weapons of his slain foes about him. They set the boat adrift in the river toward the Falls of Rauros, and sang a "Lament of the Winds" as his funeral song.

Bounded by Mordor to the north and the Mumakan lands to the south lie the deserts of the Haradwaith. Huge in area the lands of Harad are, for the most part, burning wastes. The Haradrim live on its fringes – on the coastal line in the west and in the mountainous regions of Far Harad in the south. The peoples of the coastal region are great traders and cities such as Umbar act as trading hubs for merchants and travellers. The traders of Harad ply their goods across the great deserts to Khand and to the east of the Ered Harmal, and find relief from the dust and heat in the several oases which are dotted throughout the burning wastes. Some of these oases have settlements which offer refreshment and entertainment to the weary traveller. This vignette shows such a scene. The trader, having watered and fed his camel train is resting, drinking wine and watching a dancing girl.

Baldor also known as Baldor the hapless, was the son of Brego, 2nd Lord of the Mark, and brother of Aldor, 3rd Lord of the Mark. He was said to have passed along the Paths of the Dead, through the Dark Door under Dwimorberg. Theoden said "A rash vow he spoke, as he drained the horn at the feast which Brego made to hallow new-built Meduseld, and he never came to the high seat of which he was the heir". After passing through the Dark Door, Aragorn found "...the bones of a mighty man. He had been clad in mail, and still his harness lay there whole; for the cavern's air was as dry as dust, and his hauberk was gilded. His belt was of gold and garnets, and rich with gold was the helm upon his bony head face downward on the floor. He had fallen near the far wall of the cave, as now could be seen, and before him stood a stony door closed fast: his finger-bones were still clawing at the cracks. A notched and broken sword lay by him, as if he had hewn at the rock in his last despair. Aragorn did not touch him, but after gazing silently for a while he rose and sighed. 'Hither shall the flowers of simbelmynë come never unto world's end,' he murmured. 'Nine mounds and seven there are now green with grass, and through all the long years he has lain at the door that he could not unlock. Whither does it lead? Why would he pass? None shall ever know!'" This was, presumably, Baldor.
