For those who know every fact about Middle-Earth and will be getting pie wedges very easily the group can choose these advanced rules. In these rules The Ring and The Ringwraith come into play. Each time a person wins a scoring wedge they are in possession of the Ring. With each persons turn ending players then roll for the Ringwraith who's goal is to chase after the player who possesses the ring -- if successful the player must give up one scoring wedge. War of the Ring features Epic Battles in the land of Middle-Earth. Features 215 plastic figures of Free Peoples and Shadow Armies. The "War of the Ring" is a grand-strategic simulation. While the Fellowship of the Ring advances towards Mordor, the Dark Lord Sauron tries to find the location and purpose of the Ring-bearer, at the same time unleashing his armies against the last strongholds of the Free Peoples. The Free Peoples player must use his characters wisely, as they are needed both to raise and lead the Free People armies and to help the Ring-bearer in his quest. The Dark Lord player must balance his political and military action against the search efforts needed to hunt the Ring-bearer and uncover his true purpose. Both players can win a military victory or a victory based on the final outcome of the hunt for the Ring. Faithful to the books and to the epic flavor of the stories, characters and strongholds play a major role in the flow of play and represent the main focus of the action. A simple and fun dice based "resource management" mechanism is used to determine the various types of action possible for each player. Very original and smooth mechanics have been devised to handle the hidden movement of the Fellowship of the Ring and the Hunt for the Ring. Events from the books and possible alternative events are introduced both indirectly (through the mechanics themselves) and directly with the use of a set of action/event cards which the players can use to "turn the tide" of the events in their favor.

Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation

Sophisticated Games / Fantasy Flight
2002

Designed by master game designer Reiner Knizia and illustrated by acclaimed Tolkien artist John Howe

The Confrontation. The time has come for the final confrontation between Good and Evil in Middle Earth. Will the Hobbit Frodo Baggins and his companions bring the Ring to Mount Doom in Mordor? Or will they fall to the forces of the Dark Lord Sauron and lose Middle-Earth to eternal darkness? Only one side can win! The Confrontation is a complete stand-alone game of strategy, bluffing, and adventure for two players. Illustrated by acclaimed Tolkien artist John Howe and designed by master game designer Reiner Knizia, The Confrontation is a cleaver and exciting experience waiting to be explored. Players can either take the role of the hobbits traveling from the Shire all the way to Mordor or, because sometimes being evil is fun, assume the identity of Sauron himself on a mission to stop those pesky hobbits and reclaim the ring. Takes about 30 minutes to play.

In this wonderful interpretation of the novels, the Fellowship must seek to bring Frodo Baggins to Mordor, and the dark lord Sauron must seek to capture Frodo and the One Ring before he reaches Mt. Doom. Each player controls nine characters who each have a unique special ability (the nine characters of the Fellowship of the Ring are controlled by one player, and nine of Sauron's greatest minions are controlled by the opposing player). The game uses a hidden movement system to simulate the search for the ring, and the conflict resolution system is a brilliant cardplay mechanic from a limited resource pool of cards. The dark lord Sauron is stronger and projects more power, but the Fellowship have more devious and surprising maneuvers at hand. The straight-forward gameplay of The Confrontation allows it to be played in about a half hour. Great strategy and fun!

Sauron Expansion Set

Sophisticated Games / Diamond Select
July 2003
$25
Box Dimensions (in inches): 11.7 x 11.7 x 1.7
By: Reiner Knizia

Okay look, we've all seen the movies, many of us have read the books, and plenty of us have already played the incredibly cool board game designed by Reiner Knizia. And while the determined pluck of the hobbits is obviously worthy of admiration, haven't you ever thought there was something kind of cool about Sauron? Sure you might not want to admit it, or maybe you do, but the guy is in at least a partially sympathetic spot. He just wants to rule all of creation and to do that, all he needs to do is pry some jewelry away from a hobbit. With this Sauron expansion set to the original board game, players can get their chance to play the bad guy himself, employ the Black Rider, and rule them all. But beware: with this set, the pesky hobbits have some new weapons of their own. The set includes 30 Sauron cards, nine Nazgul cards, and five Fellowship cards. It's not capable of being played on its own but makes a great counterpart, and counterpoint, to the original.

WAR OF THE RING, S.R. 1418 to 1419
GONDOR: The Siege of Minas Tirith, S. R. 1419
SAURON: The Battle for the Ring, S.A. 3434

– WAR OF THE RING recreates all the excitement of Tolkien’s renowned masterpiece. It begins with the formation of the Fellowship of the Ring at Rivendell, where the Council of Elrond determines that Frodo Baggins, the Ringbearer, and his companions must travel to Mount Doom in Mordor, the lair of Sauron, the Dark Lord. They must make their way avoiding Sauron’s servants – the nine dreaded Nazgul, vast armies of orcs, trolls and various evil figures including Shelob and the Balrog – to destroy the One Ring. Combat takes place on two levels; individual combat which is carried out through the use of individual capabilities on the character cards; and army combat, which allows players to engage in pitched battles and sieges. The two section, 33” x 34” map covers the area from the Northern Waste to Far Harad. The 400-playing pieces represent the individual characters as well as such armed forces as the Riders of Rohan and the Orc armies of both Sauron and Saruman. Also included are 112-player cards which cover many of the events and special regalia, such as Palantir and Elvish blades, that are found throughout the story. Though basically for two-players, WAR OF THE RING, contains a scenario for an active Saruman player. Every major event of the novel – and many minor ones – are re-created in a fast-moving, exciting way.

– GONDOR: The Siege of Minas Tirith depicts the crucial battle that raged in and around the final bastion of the West – the city-fortress of Minas Tirith – during the War of the Ring. The set contains 200 counters, representing the forces of Sauron (fierce orcs, trolls, Mumakil [elephants], and men) and the grim defenders of the great city. The fell Riders of Rohan, the tenacious men of Gondor, and mighty Gandalf the White struggle grimly to restrain the tide of Mordor as it washes across the 17” x 22” map portraying the Pelennor Fields and the threatened citadel in a tense contest of heroic measure.

– SAURON: The Battle for the Ring delves deep into the Tolkien mythos to re-create the epic struggle that took place before the very gates of Mordor toward the close of the Second Age. Represented by 100 playing pieces, the Elven and Numenorean armies of the legendary Elendil and Gil-Galad take on the mighty host of the wizard Sauron. The conflict blazes across the 17” x 22” map that features all of the terrain of the famous battlefield. This is the battle that preceded the Siege of Barad-Dϋr, wherein the One Ring was wrested from the very hand of its maker, only to be lost until its re-discovery in the Third Age.
