Knight on the dark side in the shot glass chess set.
Smaug the Golden was amongst the most powerful of the Fire-Drakes (Dragons) of the North in the Third Age. Smaug's sacking of Erebor (The Lonely Mountain) and Dale (Lake-town on Long Lake)
amassed him the greatest hoard of treasure still remaining in Middle-Earth at the time. Smaug rested upon his treasure for two centuries before a company of Dwarves headed by Thorin Oakenshield
would obtain a map of the Lonely Mountain from Gandalf. In the end, the vanity of Smaug allowed for a small Hobbit of the Shire, Bilbo Baggins, to spy a weakness in his defenses.

The castle (Rook) on the dark side in the shot glass chess set
Built at the base of the Ashy Mountains in Mordor, the Bard-dur was the huge fortress of Sauron. Started in the Second Age, the Barad-dur was built with the power of the One Ring, and its
foundations could not be undone unless Sauron himself were to fall. Toppled at the end of the Second Age by the armies of the Last Alliance in the battle of the Dagorlad Plain, the towers
foundations remained. Lying in stealth in Dol Guldur for most of the Third Age, Sauron would have the Barad-dur rebuilt. It was as the onset of the War of the Ring that Sauron would again
reoccupy the Dark Tower of Mordor.
