Pictured Left Top: Knickerbocker Gandalf
Plastic
1979
5.125 inches
The Knickerbocker Gandalf action figure was sold with Staff and Hat. It seems curious that this Gandalf should be robed in blue. There were indeed two blue wizards included amongst the ranks of the five Istari, but little is known of them. Gandalf was either Grey, or White. The wizard was known by many names including Olorin, Mithrandir, the Grey Wanderer, and Tharkun to the Dwarves. Gandalf was charged with matching the power of Sauron with wisdom and counsel for the free peoples of Middle-Earth.

Pictured Left Bottom (2 Photos): Knickerbocker Gollum
Plastic
1979
Gollum was originally a Stoor, a close relation to a Hobbit, that grew up on the banks of the Anduin River near the Gladden Fields. Having killed his friend Deagol for possession of the One Ring, Smeagol would eventually find his way under the Misty Mountains near the High Pass and slowly transform into the creature Gollum. It was his need for the Ring that finally got him captured by Sauron and set the events in motion that led to the War of the Ring. This Gollum action figure has articulating arms, legs, and head.

The Knickerbocker Lord of the Rings Action Figures series was produced to coincided with the release of the 1978 Ralph Bakshi animated Lord of the Rings movie.

Knickerbocker Lord of the Rings Aragorn Knickerbocker Aragorn
Plastic
1979
5 inches
While still mostly known as a Dunedain Ranger to most people, Aragorn and his company would go about the north and south of Middle-Earth assisting Kings and Queens in any way they could. Amongst the people helped by Aragorn was Thengel, father of Theoden, and Ecthelion, father of Denethor, who had no idea as to the true lineage of Aragorn. For most of his life, no one outside of Elrond and a few others in Rivendell, had any idea Aragorn was heir to the throne of Gondor. This Knickerbocker Aragorn action figure was sold with Sword and Scabbard.

Knickerbocker Lord of the Rings Frodo Baggins Knickerbocker Frodo Baggins
Plastic
1979
At about three inches tall, this Frodo Baggins action figure seems a bit puzzling. On one hand he is pictured with Elven cloak and Sting on the packaging, but the action figure itself is without the Elven cloak, and that may be Sting hanging off his side in the picture, though it is hard to tell. Even stranger is the accompanying horse for Frodo Baggins. Did they even read the books? If that is Sting on his side, then why is a sword provided with his horse? Besides, Hobbits do not ride horses, small ponies, OK, but not horses. The exception, of course, is Bullroarer Took.

Knickerbocker Lord of the Rings Frodo Baggins Horse Knickerbocker Frodo Baggins Horse
Plastic
1979
7.5 inches
The Knickerbocker Frodo Baggins Horse action figure was sold with Sword and Scabbard, because every horse in Middle-Earth was well schooled in sword-play. At least the horse has a scabbard for his sword. Can't run around Middle-Earth with a sword and no place to sheath it. Okay, I am being overly hard on these guys. These action figures are, after all, some of the hardest toys to find from the animated version of Lord of the Rings. If you can find them still in their packaging...get them if the price is reasonable.

Knickerbocker Lord of the Rings Sam Gamgee Knickerbocker Samwise Gamgee
Plastic
1979
3 inches
I am guessing that this Sam Gamgee action figure was produced after the Frodo Baggins action figure. Someone at Knickerbocker must have said "Hang on, Hang on...maybe we should put Sam's sword and scabbard with Sam himself this time, or we will end up selling his horse separately carrying these things". The Knickerbocker Samwise Gamgee action figure was sold with Sword and Scabbard.

Knickerbocker Lord of the Rings Black Rider Knickerbocker Ringwraith, The Black Rider
Plastic
1979
This Ringwraith action figure certainly is not true to the literature. The animated Lord of the Rings movie...OK sure, looks pretty good in live-action animation. The Knickerbocker Ringwraith action figure was sold with Cape, Belt and Scabbard. The Nine Nazgul were the chief tool of terror for Sauron. Residing primarily in Minas Morgul during the Third Age, they were unleashed on the Shire when Gollum, captured by Sauron, alerted the Dark Lord to the finding of his One Ring and the name of Baggins.

Knickerbocker Lord of the Rings Black Rider Horse Knickerbocker Black Rider's Horse
Plastic
1979
7.5 inches
Coerced and tortured to withstand the terror of the Nazgul, these Steeds were breed in Mordor for the sole purpose of carrying their frightful masters. The Knickerbocker Black Rider's Horse was sold with Reins, Saddle and Battle Shield. Battle Shield?!?...okay fine, I am not saying anything more.
